Many people do not know whether they are going to heaven or hell when they die. Many have no idea what they must do to get to heaven. Most think that if they live a basically good life, doing more good things than bad things, they will somehow make it to heaven. Others think that if they are a member of a church, give money to the church, and help the poor, they will go to heaven. But the only way to find out what we must do to go to heaven is to read the Bible and find out what God says about it.

In the book of Ephesians (Eph. 2:8-9); the Apostle Paul said, “For by grace are you saved (from your sins) through faith; and that not of your selves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest anyone should boast.” The Apostle Paul says we are saved by God’s grace (His willingness to send His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and to spend three days in hell to pay the price for our sins). Paul points out that we are saved from our sins by believing in what God did for us through His Son Jesus. He says there is nothing we can do to save ourselves. He says we are not saved by doing good works. He says salvation, from our sins and hell, is a gift of God. A gift is something that is free that we must receive.

God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and other commandments so we would know what was right and wrong in God’s eyes. So if we could save ourselves by obeying God’s commandments, there was no need for God to send His son Jesus to die on the cross and shed His blood for our sins. But God sent Jesus to die for us because we all sin (Romans 3:23) and we cannot remove our sins by doing good things. God says (Leviticus 17:ll & Hebrews. 9:22) that without the shedding of Jesus’ blood no one’s sins will be removed. So only the blood of Jesus will wash away the sins of the world. We receive eternal life through the blood of Jesus because God says the life is in the blood. In the book of Isaiah 59:2, it says that our sins separate us from God. In Romans 5:17, the Apostle Paul says this separation is spiritual death.

This is why Jesus said in the Gospel of John 3:3, “Except a man be born-again, he cannot see the kingdom of God!” When we are born-again spiritually, we are made spiritually alive again unto God because our sins have been washed away by the blood of Jesus. Jesus said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish (go to hell), but have everlasting life (go to heaven).” Many people know that Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins. Satan also knows that Jesus is the Son of God, but Satan will not be in heaven because he rejected God and His ways. Satan is the author of sin. So it is not enough to know who Jesus is, but we must receive Him and what He did for us on the cross.

So what must we do to receive the free gift of salvation and be born-again (made spiritually alive unto God with eternal life)? The Apostle Paul tells us what we must do to receive this free gift in Romans 10:9 – if we confess with our mouths and believe with our hearts that Jesus is our Lord and Savior and that God raised Him from the dead we will be saved. Paul is simply saying that if we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior (who took our place on the cross and went to hell for us and rose again from the dead) and say it out loud with our mouth, then we will be saved from our sins and we will be spiritually born again. You will be guaranteed to go to heaven when you die.

So, if you have never said this prayer and you want to be saved from your sins, please say it out loud now: “Father in heaven, I know that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. Forgive me of all my sins. I now say with, my mouth and believe in my heart that Jesus is my Lord and Savior, who shed His blood for me on the cross and died for my sins and was raised again from the dead. Thank you Father for saving me from my sins. Thank you that I am now spiritually born-again. Thank you for making me your child. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Now you are a born-again child of God. Welcome to the family of God.
